IDA and the Global Safety Net
Donor countries are finalizing pledges toward the latest replenishment of the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s concessional lending arm. As the largest source of official finance for the world’s poorest countries, IDA is a critical part of the global financial safety net, especially during crises—as evidenced by the exceptional IDA fundraising effort during the COVID pandemic.
Join CGD and Africatalyst for a discussion on the sidelines of the World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings on IDA’s performance in the current polycrisis and its new approach to results management.
The discussions, featuring officials from both donor countries and IDA recipients, will touch on several main questions:
- How well has IDA met the financing needs of African countries as they struggle with overlapping crises, including the aftermath of COVID, the war in Ukraine, and global financial tightening?
- Is IDA equipped for the next crisis? How should it engage on debt and climate, and does the current replenishment model still work?
- What effect will IDA’s overhauled approach to measuring results have on accountability and impact, especially on gender issues?
This event is being co-hosted with Africatalyst.
