Latin America’s positioning for cop 16 of the convention on biological diversity to be held in Colombia

October 22, 2024

COP 16, under the motto “Peace with Nature”, to be held in Cali, Colombia from 21 October to 1 November, is taking place in a context of unprecedented environmental crisis, marked by massive forest fires that have devastated thousands of hectares in the Amazon, destroying essential ecosystems and aggravating the problem of climate change; by increasingly frequent and intense tropical storms and hurricanes; increasingly prolonged droughts that affect the availability of water in agriculture, the supply of energy and aquatic ecosystems; among other impacts.

From an ecofeminist perspective, it is essential to recognize that women are not only victims of environmental deterioration, but key agents in the defense of biodiversity, in the fight for climate justice and above all in the preservation of life. As Vandana Shiva pointed out, the patriarchal logic of domination over women and nature is the common root of ecological and social crises. Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in rural and indigenous communities, play a crucial role in social reproduction through sustainable management of natural resources, biodiversity conservation and climate action, despite their limited access to financial resources. It is urgent that their leadership, perspectives and praxis be effectively integrated into climate policies and nature conservation, and that the gender approach be a central issue in the discussions and agreements reached at the COP.
